Lake Kawaguchi – epic view of Mt. Fuji surrounded by red leaves

Lake Kawaguchi

Lake Kawaguchi was our last stop on our journey across Japan and a brief moment of relaxation before our plane back to Denmark.

Lake Kawaguchi is a hot spring resort, with a stunning view of Mt. Fuji, exceptionally breathtaking during the cherry blossom season (mid-April) and the autumn foliage (first half of November). It is one of the five lakes near Mt. Fuji, with the easiest access from Tokyo.

We booked a ryokan with the view of Mt. Fuji and were lucky enough to arrive right before the sunset. The view was incredible and beautifully ended our Japan trip. The next day, we woke up to our first rain in three weeks, with clouds that totally covered the mountain. It felt like Japan was saying goodbye to us 🙂

When you book a hotel, make sure it is on the north shore of the lake, as you will get the best views from that side of the lake.

If you are there during autumn foliage, make sure to visit Momiji Tunnel – a maple tree-covered road section along the lake’s northern shore.

And if you have more time than us, try:

  • Taking a cruise around the lake.
  • Taking Kawaguchiko Ropeway up Mt. Tenjo for panoramic views of Mt. Fuji.
  • Visiting Chureito Pagoda located inside Arakurayama Sengen Park for the iconic image.
  • Visiting Fuji Q Highland theme park that has one of the best rollercoasters in the world! More info here.
