Grenen is hailed by many as Denmark’s northernmost point, which marks the junction between two seas, Skagerrak (North Sea) and the Kattegat (Baltic Sea). The turbulent colliding seas have created a 4-km long curved sandbar growing by 10 meters each year. Even though most say it is the northmost point, the true northmost point, however, is located 2,5km northwest of Grenen.
Because of Grenen unique location, you can observe how ferocious waves of both seas are crashing against each other mixing different colors of the water. Due to the strong and extremely dangerous currents, bathing, however, is strictly prohibited.
If you like birds and mammals, the area surrounding Grenen is the place with the greatest number of observed bird species and sea mammals in all of Denmark.
Be prepared that the tip is quite crowded. Everyone wants to take a selfie at the top of Denmark with two seas in the background. So be prepared to wait for a while until it is your turn to snap a picture 😉
How to get there
You can either take a short walk from picturesque Skagen along the beach or take Sandormen (sandworm), a tractor-pulled wagon that has been ferrying visitors since the 1950s.
And now to the BEST part of my visit!
While I was taking photos, we have noticed a small seal pup swimming nearby. Of course, the focus of all people moved to it right away. Imagine our surprise, when the pup decided to take a break right where the whole crowd was standing to take pictures of the seas!
I must admit people were responsible enough. Even though everyone tried to take a photo with it, no one touched the pup (and if someone attempted to, the rest of the crowd reacted) and everyone kept their distance. Someone found a sign, that was saying that you should not touch the seal pup and you should just let it rest, and a tape that we used to make a safe parameter around the seal.
It was my first time being so close to a seal outside of a zoo! Even all the seal safaris allowed me only to take a look at it from afar – my camera zoom is good but not that great ;(. Seal appearance made this part of the trip truly unforgettable!!
