A Spontaneous Adventure to Bognæs Forest

Bognæs Forest

Not too long ago, we found ourselves with a totally open weekend – a pretty unusual thing after a couple of months jam-packed with activities. Since I’m supposed to be getting in shape for the Camino walk, and finding the time for that has been a bit of a challenge, we decided to seize the day and go explore somewhere new.

The sun was out, and I just picked a random spot on the map, aiming our adventure towards the Bognæs forest close to Roskilde. Honestly, I chose it because it had a quirky look on the map, and I was itching for a change from our usual spots 🙂

Off we went, but wouldn’t you know it? As soon as we hit the road, the sky opened up, and it started pouring. Not sure how the adventure would go, we continued driving, and we landed in this beautiful place!

The hike was perfect—about 9km. It was long enough to feel accomplished but not so tough that we were dying. We started on a path with ominous clouds on one side hinting at more rain and adorable farmhouses on the other. Somehow, we lucked out, and the clouds just skirted around us, leaving us dry.

Entering the forest was like walking into a wonderland of wild garlic – I’ve never been hit with such a powerful scent of garlic in my life! Along the way, we saw squirrels munching on nuts and even a group of deer darting across a clearing. I’ve heard there’s a rare beetle around here too.

The place wasn’t crowded, and the few people we bumped into seemed to be into bird watching, decked out with binoculars and cameras. What really blew our minds was discovering that Bognæs forest is a protected area and home to the white-tailed eagle, Northern Europe’s biggest bird of prey. They even breed here!

All in all, it was an awesome outing. And hey, if I ever muster the patience to camp out with my camera to catch a shot of that eagle, you’ll be the first to see the pics!
