On our way back from Krka National Park, we were heading back towards Split when something caught our eye—Klis Fortress, perched dramatically on a hilltop. With the sun slowly setting down and not much time left before closing, we decided to try our luck and see if we could squeeze in a quick visit. And guess what? We hit the jackpot!
We arrived just 30 minutes before closing, and the incredibly kind lady at the entrance let us in for free—on one condition: we had to promise to be back five minutes before the gates shut. Challenge accepted!
Did we wish we had more time to explore? Of course! But honestly, watching the sunset from the fortress walls, with panoramic views over Split and the Adriatic Sea, made it totally worth it. Plus, getting in for free was an unexpected bonus, so no complaints here! 😄
History
Perched high above Split, in the mountain pass between Mosor and Kozjak, Klis Fortress has been standing guard for over two millennia. It was originally built as a stronghold by the Illyrian Dalmatae tribe before being taken over by the Romans. After the Roman Empire crumbled, it became home to Croatian kings and later played a crucial role in defending the Balkans.
Throughout history, no invading army could conquer Klis—not even the Mongols. That is, until the 16th century, when the Ottomans finally took control, marking the beginning of Turkish rule.
After more than a century under Ottoman rule, in 1669, the Klis Fortress was besieged and seized by the Republic of Venice, who restored and enlarged the fortress. After the fall of the Republic of Venice, Austria took over the fortress.
Fun fact for Game of Thrones fans
Klis Fortress was used as a filming location for the city of Meereen in Game of Thrones! Remember the scene where Daenerys liberates the people from Slaver’s Bay? Yep—that was filmed right here!
