The Ultimate Guide to Vienna’s Must-Visit Christmas Markets

Christmas Markets in Vienna

It’s finally that time of year when Christmas markets start popping up, and it hit me that I’ve never actually written about the magical Christmas markets in Vienna! Somehow, anything pre-COVID feels like it happened a lifetime ago.

We took a weekend trip there in early December, and though we only had two days, it was just enough to soak in the festive spirit of the city. Even without a snowy backdrop, the early nightfall and twinkling Christmas lights made everything feel wonderfully magical. The markets were dotted all around the city, set up on squares and in front of Vienna’s iconic landmarks. Naturally, there were crowds—it’s the charm of any city with Christmas markets on a weekend—but, for the most part, it was pretty manageable. That said, the market at Rathausplatz was a bit too crowded for our taste, so we didn’t linger there for too long.

Schönbrunn Palace

Schönbrunn Palace, once the Habsburgs’ summer residence, is a bit out of the main city area but super easy to reach by public transport. At Christmas, a festive market sets up right in front, adding to the charm! While you’re there, you can tour the palace (ticketed) and wander through the beautiful gardens (free of charge). For a stunning view of Vienna, climb up to the Gloriette on the hill—you won’t regret it!

Karlsplatz

Karlsplatz is centered around the beautiful Karlskirche (St. Charles Church). Each Christmas, it transforms into Art Advent, one of the city’s most unique Christmas markets. Known for its warm, artsy atmosphere, this market emphasizes handmade crafts and local artisans, bringing a refreshing originality and diversity not always found in Vienna’s other Christmas markets.

Rathausplatz

The Wiener Christkindlmarkt, Vienna’s most popular Christmas market, is set in front of the beautifully illuminated City Hall on Rathausplatz. With the stunning backdrop and enchanting light displays in the surrounding park, it truly feels magical. However, being the city’s top spot for holiday cheer also means it draws the biggest crowds. We strolled through once but quickly decided to escape the bustle, as the crowd was a bit much for us to fully enjoy!

Belvedere

The Belvedere Christmas Market is nestled in front of the stunning Upper Belvedere Palace, once the residence of Prince Eugene of Savoy, dating back to around 1717. While this market is a bit quieter and more intimate than some of Vienna’s larger markets, the elegant palace backdrop makes it a lovely spot for a relaxed, scenic stroll.

Maria-Theresien-Platz

Maria-Theresien-Platz is beautifully nestled between two of Vienna’s grand museums: the Kunsthistorisches Museum (Museum of Art History) on one side and the Naturhistorisches Museum (Natural History Museum) on the other. This striking location adds a unique cultural charm to the square, especially during the holiday season.

Spittelberg

The Spittelberg Christmas Market stands out from the others in Vienna. Instead of centering around a single square or landmark, it winds through charming narrow streets, alleyways, and cozy courtyards. With lighted doorways leading into galleries, craft shops, and bars, the market feels like an enchanting maze. We loved wandering around, unsure where it began or ended, adding a touch of adventure to the holiday cheer.

Stephansplatz

The Stephansplatz Christmas Market circles around the iconic St. Stephen’s Cathedral, creating a stunning festive backdrop. If you have a moment, take a peek inside the cathedral, climb up the stairs for breathtaking views of Vienna, or catch an Advent concert to add a touch of seasonal magic to your visit.
