On one of those rare sunny days, I felt the itch for a little adventure and randomly picked a castle on the map. That’s how I ended up at Vallø Slot—a charming spot with a cozy garden.
The History of Vallø Slot
Vallø Slot was built in the mid-1500s, but what really sets it apart is its unique purpose. In 1737, Queen Sophia Magdalene established the Noble Vallø Foundation for Unmarried Daughters, providing residence for unmarried, divorced, or widowed women of Danish nobility. Amazingly, this tradition continues today, and Vallø Slot remains a home for noblewomen.
Unfortunately, the castle itself isn’t open to the public, but the beautiful gardens surrounding the castle are accessible and worth a visit. I went on a beautiful sunny day, and the grounds were alive with people enjoying games, picnics, and the warmth of the sun.
How to Get There
The easiest way to get to Vallø Slot is by car, with a small parking lot conveniently located nearby. For those without a car, it’s also accessible by bike. You can take your bike on the S-train to Køge and then cycle the rest of the way—it’s a great way to combine sightseeing with a bit of exercise!
